Executive recruitment in Belgium – what should you know before entering this market?
Belgium is one country, but not one uniform talent market. Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels differ in language, business culture and relationship structures, so the location of the role affects both the candidate profile and the way the process should be conducted.
At executive level, multilingual executives who can move comfortably between Dutch, French and English are particularly valued. Recruiting senior managers in Belgium increasingly also involves transformation, digital and ESG capabilities, although their importance varies by region and sector.
Entering the Belgian market requires a company to define the area of responsibility, the language used in day-to-day work and the relevant stakeholder groups with precision. Regional differences in Belgium need to be reflected in the job brief from the outset. Senior leadership recruitment in Belgium should be designed around this context, while executive search in Belgium should also test whether a candidate can build consensus in a complex environment.
Language requirements shape access to candidates
Requiring fluency in two or three languages can narrow the pool considerably. It is worth distinguishing between a language that is essential for leading the team and managing client relationships and one that is merely desirable, so strong leaders are not excluded without a business reason.
The region influences leadership style
A candidate who succeeds in one region may not operate equally well in another. Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels differ in communication and decision-making styles, so cultural fit should be assessed in the specific local context.
Candidates assess the purpose and impact of the role
Experienced leaders look beyond remuneration to the purpose of the position, flexibility and the opportunity to make a real impact. A company entering Belgium needs a coherent story about the role, strategy and accountability, especially when competing with well-known local employers.
